Sistema in the City
This project interprets the theme of hybridity to design a building that combines an existing cultural landmark in the Merchant City of Glasgow with a new music facility.
El Sistema is a voluntary music-education programme which aims to provide young people with weekly music tuition, as well as the free use of musical instruments. The proposed building consists of a Sistema music school, with performance spaces and a café. El Sistema uses music education as a way of contributing to positive social change. With almost a third of children in Glasgow raised in poverty in 2016, the project aims to make a substantial contribution to the cultural lives of young people in the city.
The site, bound by Candleriggs, Ingram Street and Albion Street, is focused on a large mural on the north façade of the city’s Fruit Market. The concert hall and main circulation spaces are all oriented towards this mural, providing the opportunity for outdoor performances and indoor events which are set against the backdrop of the mural.
Part of the city’s mural trail, the site has a number of existing cherry trees which the scheme will protect incorporate. The cherry trees will contribute to the character of more secluded areas of the building, where students can practice in spaces built with natural materials to complement and mirror the outside spaces.
